About Handyman Middlesbrough
A local, family-run property maintenance service covering Middlesbrough, Stockton, Redcar and the wider Tees Valley. Reliable, fairly priced, and built on word-of-mouth recommendation.
Who We Are
Handyman Middlesbrough is a local property maintenance and home-improvement business based in central Middlesbrough and serving the wider Teesside area. We are a small, hands-on team — not a national franchise, not a call centre, and not a marketing brand subcontracting work to whoever is closest. The person you speak to by email is the person who will come out to do the work, or one of a handful of people who work with us on a regular basis. That continuity matters: it is what allows us to build a relationship with our customers and to know the quirks of each property we have worked on before.
We started doing this kind of work because we were tired of seeing the same problems repeated by other tradesmen. Quotes that doubled once work started. Visits booked in for a Wednesday morning that turned up on Thursday afternoon, or not at all. Repairs that lasted six months when they should have lasted ten years. There is no real magic to delivering a better service than that — it just requires turning up, being honest about prices, and using the right materials. We are committed to all three, and we charge a fair rate for the privilege.
What We Do
We carry out the full range of handyman, maintenance and home-improvement services across Middlesbrough and Teesside. The services pages on this site list our main offerings, but in practice the boundaries are flexible. If you have a job that does not obviously fit one of the categories, ask us anyway — most domestic property work falls within our remit. The exceptions are gas work (which legally requires a Gas Safe engineer) and notifiable Part P electrical work, both of which we sub-contract to trusted local specialists. For everything else — kitchens, bathrooms, plumbing, decorating, carpentry, gardening, fencing, roofing, driveways, glazing, security and the long tail of small jobs that every home has — we are your service.
Our typical week is a mix of small jobs and larger projects. We might spend a Monday morning fitting a new outside tap and replacing a kitchen tap in Linthorpe, then move on to a half-day of flatpack assembly in Marton. Tuesday could be a full kitchen door replacement in Acklam. Wednesday might be a fence run in Stockton. By the end of the week we may have worked in eight different homes across the Tees Valley, and that variety is one of the things we enjoy most about the trade.
Our Approach
There are three principles that guide our work, and they are simple. First, turn up when we said we would. Most of our work is booked in advance with a specific morning or afternoon slot, and we are obsessive about keeping those slots. If anything threatens to delay us, we email the customer first; we never disappear without communication. Second, charge what we quoted. Our quotes are written, itemised, and given without obligation. The price you pay at the end is the price we quoted at the start, with the only exceptions being genuine variations that you ask us to add to the job. Third, leave the property tidier than we found it. Dust sheets, drop cloths, vacuuming and waste removal are part of the standard service, not optional extras.
Beyond those three principles, we believe in repair-first thinking. Modern consumer culture pushes towards replacement over repair, but in many cases a properly diagnosed and properly executed repair lasts as long as a new fitting and saves the customer significant cost. A leaking tap usually needs a £5 cartridge, not a £200 new tap. A misted double-glazed unit needs a £100 sealed unit replacement, not a £1,000 new window. A sagging fence usually needs new posts and the existing panels reused, not a complete new fence. We will always tell you when repair is genuinely uneconomic, but we will not push for replacement when repair is the right answer.
Insurance, Qualifications and Standards
Where formal qualifications are relevant — Part P registration for notifiable electrical work, Gas Safe for gas work, IPAF for working at height, qualifications for tree surgery — we work with appropriately registered specialists, and we will always be honest about what we are and are not personally qualified to do. We do not take on work that should be done by someone else.
Our work is guaranteed for a minimum of twelve months from completion against any defects in workmanship, and we will return to put right anything that goes wrong within that period at no additional cost. Many of our larger installations come with manufacturer warranties of significantly longer than that — kitchen carcasses, sealed glazing units, masonry paints, roofing membranes — and we will pass those warranties through to you with documentation when the work completes.
Areas We Cover
From our base in Middlesbrough we cover the whole Tees Valley including Stockton-on-Tees, Thornaby, Redcar, Yarm, Ingleby Barwick, Eaglescliffe, Marske, Saltburn, Guisborough, Norton, Billingham, Hartlepool, and all the surrounding villages and outlying areas. There is no minimum job size and our pricing is consistent across all areas we cover. See our areas page for more detail on each town.
