Driveways That Last in Teesside Weather

A driveway is one of the more expensive bits of work most homeowners ever pay for, and it is also one of the most visible. Get it right and the front of the house lifts immediately; get it wrong and the cracks, depressions and ponding are an eyesore that you live with every day. Middlesbrough's wet, occasionally freezing weather puts particular demands on driveways — water needs somewhere to go, and freeze-thaw cycles will find any weakness in foundation or jointing. We have laid enough driveways across Teesside to know what works and what fails after the second hard winter.

We take on full driveway installations, partial replacements, repair work and complete relays. We also handle paths, patios, garden steps and driveway-related work such as new dropped kerbs (where the council requires this) and replacement of damaged Bartlett edging. We do not subcontract: the team that meets you for the quote is the team that lays the driveway.

Paving Materials and Approaches

Choosing the right material for your driveway depends on the look you want, the budget you have, and the way the driveway will be used. Block paving is the most popular choice for domestic driveways: it looks smart, stands up well to vehicle weight, and individual blocks can be lifted and reset if needed. Tarmac is cheaper for larger driveways and is hard-wearing but offers fewer aesthetic options. Resin-bonded gravel is a contemporary choice that combines the look of gravel with a smooth, weed-free surface. Imprinted concrete is durable but cannot easily be repaired in the way that block paving can. Each has trade-offs.

Foundations and Drainage

Most driveway failures we are called out to repair are foundation failures, not surface failures. A driveway laid on inadequate sub-base, or with no fall to drain water away, or without proper edge restraints, will fail within a few winters no matter how well the surface is laid. Our standard specification includes a full sub-base of compacted MOT type 1 stone, properly graded falls of at least 1 in 80 to direct water to drainage, and concrete-bedded edge courses around the entire perimeter. For larger driveways we add cross-drains where needed.

Permeable paving is now a requirement for many new driveways under the Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) guidance, particularly where you are paving over previously soft ground. Permeable systems use a different sub-base of clean angular stone that allows water to soak through to the ground rather than running off into the road or a drain. We are familiar with all the current requirements and we can advise on whether your driveway needs permeable construction.

Repairs and Restoration

Many older driveways do not need full replacement but rather targeted repair work and restoration. A re-sand and re-seal can dramatically rejuvenate block paving that has lost its joint sand. Replacement of a small area of cracked or sunken blocks, blended into the surrounding driveway, can resolve the worst eyesores without the cost of a full relay. We are happy to give an honest opinion on whether your driveway is best repaired or replaced.

Driveway quotes are based on a site visit. We measure the area, assess the existing surface, check drainage requirements, and provide a fixed-price written quote. A typical 50-square-metre block-paved driveway takes us about a week from excavation to completion. We always agree start and finish dates in writing, and we set up the site neatly with proper signage and waste containment so the disruption to you and your neighbours is minimised.
